East West Medical Society

The East West Medical Society (EWMS), a non-profit organization, was formed to take over the administration of the school. In the process of this change, the school was renamed the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

The College acknowledges the past, welcomes the future and embraces a variety of models of Oriental Medicine and therapies which students are exposed to in their course of study. Dr. Tan continues his involvement with the College by acting as an advisor.

In October of 2000, the College received official charity status.

Although the College has always worked on a non-profit basis, this new status brings with it many new opportunities. The College is now in a position to bid for government, corporate and private funding. This will allow the College to provide an even higher standard of education and to offer more extensive services to the community.

This status also brings with it certain responsibilities. The College is required to be involved in different areas of the community. For all of us at the College, we see this as an exciting challenge to promote the importance and benefits of oriental medicine and to contribute to improved community health and well-being.

The board of EWMS is composed of faculty members, student representatives, alumni, and interested members from the community. All board members are volunteers and participate because of their commitment to the work of the College. Guided by the mission statement, EWMS supports the philosophy, goals and programs of the College and oversees operations.

Members of EWMS are elected at the Society's Annual General Meeting usually held in October of each year.
